Formed in April 2008, within six months our numbers rose to 150 – made up largely of women (of all ages) with little or no musical background but with an enthusiasm and a readiness to commit to this opportunity to sing with others, and to achieve a standard which could be enjoyed by audiences.
Our inaugural concert, planned for November 2008, sold out several weeks beforehand.
An additional matinee concert was added – and this also sold out as soon as it was announced. Following the sell-out of yet another performance one week later, a fourth – and final – inaugural concert was announced for 18th November. There is a full programme of concerts in 2009 and beyond.
Although our members are mainly amateur musicians, we work with professional Musical Directors and soloists and enjoy a repertoire which encompasses a wide range of music, from folk songs, popular show music and spiritual songs to modern classics by Benjamin Britten and John Rutter.
The response to the formation of this new choir is a complete surprise, having apparently uncovered a need among the ladies of South East Essex. Rehearsals take place in Hadleigh, Essex and members say how much they look forward to Tuesday evenings, when hard work is combined with laughter, and professional training takes place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Friendships also have the opportunity to grow in social events.
The ladies of the Orpheus Singers are delighted to be a new part of the local music community, and we hope that you will regularly enjoy our concerts!
